Upma is a savoury dish used for breakfast. When I'm tired of pasta and rice, this is a delicious and easy dish to make
Upma
160 g semolina
480 g boiling water
40 grams of ghee or olive oil
1 small onion chopped
2 dried Kashmiri in half
2 garlic cloves chopped
1 piece of ginger (2 cm) chopped
10 fresh curry leaves
½ tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
75 grams of tomatoes in pieces
60 g frozen green peas
1 tsp salt
some unsalted cashew nuts for decoration
some cilantro chopped for decoration
lemon juice
Place ghee or olive oil in a pot, and warm it up. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When they are popping, add onion, kasmiri chillies in pieces, ginger and garlic. Then, add curry leaves, turmeric and salt.
Add chopped tomatoes, peas and salt and cook 5 minutes. Add the water and boil it. Turn the heat to low flame. Add semolina slowly (like you do with polenta), to avoid any lumps. Cook it at low-medium heat until semolina is done (about 3-4 minutes). Be careful it is very hot!. Serve it on a dish, and add some lemon drops, and cashews and cilantro for garnishing. ENJOY!
I have never had anything like this...what an exotic and a delicious breakfast!
