Yemen, and specifically, Socotra Island is in my bucket list. I was watching some YouTube when a Yemenis dish of lentils pop-up. I love lentils, and if they are spicier even better!!
Lentils Yemenis Style (adapted from Yemenis dish of lentils)
200g red lentils soaked for 30 minutes
Olive oil
2 tsp cumin seeds
One onion chopped
4 garlic cloves chopped
2.5 cm ginger, minced
1 tsp coriander seeds ftreshly grinded
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
3 tomatoes, blended
3 bay leaves
Salt to taste
3 cups water
300g onions sliced
2.5 tbsp butter
3 cloves garlic sliced
4 dried chili
In a pot, heat olive oil, and add cumin seeds, fry for 2 minutes.Add onion, garlic, and ginger. Sautee them for 4 minutes at medium high heat. Add coriander powder, chili powder, and turmeric. Sautee them for 4 minutes. Add blended tomatoes, and cook for 6-7 minutes at medium heat. Add drained lentils, bay leaves, salt, and water. Cook for 30-40 minutes.
In the meantime, fry sliced onions until they are brownish. Add it to the lentils.
In a pan, melt the butter, and add garlic, dried chili, and some hot paprika. Let it temper. Add it to the lentils when they are done. Stir it well. Serve it with Yemenese bread. ENJOY!!
